On the Road Again

I am feeling generally uninspired with cooking this week... mostly because I have no time to do it. I was in Baltimore this past weekend for a long weekend, and since I got back Monday night at 11 (thanks a lot, 3-hour delay!) and was at work Tuesday morning at 8, I didn't have a ton of time to do grocery shopping. Or... any time to do grocery shopping. I've been making some creative dinners and lunches, and supplementing by going to Fresh Market when I need vegetables, and finally caved and hit Whole Foods yesterday afternoon since the fruits and vegetables in my fridge consisted of applesauce, shredded carrots, and a lemon. Yum?

In any case, I've been going going going since last week. First of all, I headed to the annual California Speech and Hearing Association conference on Friday in San Francisco! As I stayed over in my parents' condo overnight, I went out in search of breakfast (and COFFEE) early Friday morning pre-conference. As there wasn't a lot open yet, I stumbled across a giant 24 Hour Walgreens downtown, and saw THIS:

A juice bar. In a Walgreens.

They also had espresso. WHAT.

I am not typically a juice kind of girl... in fact, I don't really do juice. Ever. However, this place had a juice with beets, carrot, ginger, and apple called "49ers Scarlet," and we all know how I feel about the 49ers... and making veggies delicious too, I guess. So, it was done.

Delish!

Also passed by my favorite High School staple, Naan and Curry. Unfortunately I didn't get any, but it's the most fabulous cheap Bay Area Indian restaurant/institution ever. Mmmmmm.

Naan and Curry, I shall return.

So the remainder of this post shall be a share of a few pics from a lovely (but too quick!) long weekend in Baltimore. My mom and her siblings and my sister and I went to surprise my Great Aunt Reada (mom's aunt) for her 90th on March 30th. The five of us surprised her on Saturday night at dinner, then on Sunday, in lieu of "brunch," we had actually planned a huge surprise party at Aunt Reada's retirement community, with many members of her family and her late husband's family that she hadn't seen for years!

DRANKZ ON THE PLANE:

Since we're a B&B family, we stayed at an adorable B&B called Rachael's Dowry in downtown Baltimore, just a few steps from Camden Yard! We had some amazing quiches and fruit with yogurt and granola for breakfast (unfortunately no pics) and slept in very cozy, big beds.

The library was my favorite - a cute sitting room full of books, brandy, and mini cookies in the afternoon!

Anne and I did a 6-mile run on Sunday (and it POURED on us for the last four miles, thanks weather!) and my mom and I did a 2-mile jog before sitting on airplanes all day Monday. I also toured around Camden Yard a little with my Uncle Sam - it was opening day Monday, so the crowds were out starting around 8:30am having a few beers - duh.

The party was a huge success! Aunt Reada was so surprised and happy to have so much family around - the best gift! We got to see a lot of second and third cousins that we hadn't seen in our adult lives either, and we met our great uncle (grandmother and Aunt Reada's brother) for the first time! Some highlights:

And our present for Aunt Reada? A book in which we included some pictures of the family over the years, and letters from each of us. Not a dry eye in the house when that went around.

So I'm prepping now for my half marathon this weekend, the Rock n' Roll San Francisco! Although my friend who I was supposed to run with is now injured, which I'm really sad about, I am still excited to take part, of course. I was generally impressed with the organization of the race, as well as the race swag and quality of free food post-race when I did my first half in October, another Rock n' Roll Series one. The gear check moved super quickly and had a lot of volunteers working, the finish line festival had easily marked places to meet up with family and friends, and there were water/gatorade stops and port-o-potties every few miles.

I'm even more excited about this race because of the San Francisco scenery - I get to run across the Golden Gate Bridge again, and we start out by the ocean. Should be gorgeous!

Happy almost weekend, everyone!
